The Android story: TWA vs. native WebView
A Trusted Web Activity shows your PWA inside Chrome, full screen. It is lightweight and keeps web push and the service worker cache. The trade-offs: the user must have Chrome (or another supported browser) installed and updated, you cannot add native features Chrome does not expose, and the app looks and behaves exactly like the website, which is what Google's minimum-functionality reviewers look at.
WebViewGold for Android gives you a real app shell: native splash screen, offline screen, back-button handling, push, QR scanner, biometric unlock, App Links and the option to inject CSS that hides website-only elements. If your PWA is excellent and you only need Google Play, PWABuilder is a fine, free choice. If you also need iOS, read on.
The iOS story
Apple has no equivalent of TWA. PWABuilder's iOS output is a WebView wrapper generated from your manifest, labeled experimental, with the explicit note that Apple may reject it under the minimum-functionality guideline. In practice the outcome depends on what your app does and on what you add natively, which is exactly the part the generator does not cover.
WebViewGold for iOS is built for that review: configurable native features, the Social Login Helper, Universal Links, push, IAP, and documentation written around App Store submissions. The free readiness check tells you upfront which parts of your PWA need work.
Recommendation
- Google Play only, perfect PWA, no native features needed: PWABuilder.
- App Store (with or without Google Play): WebViewGold, so both apps share one codebase and one set of native features.
- Both stores with push and IAP: WebViewGold for iOS and Android.
Frequently asked questions
Does WebViewGold need a service worker or manifest?
No. Any URL works. If your app is a PWA, WebViewGold can still use the manifest's icons and name as a starting point, and standard caching keeps working inside the app.
Can I use PWABuilder for Android and WebViewGold for iOS?
Yes. Many teams do. Keep in mind that the two apps will behave differently (Chrome TWA vs. native WebView) and that push notifications work differently on each.
Is a PWA enough without any store?
For some audiences, yes. Discovery, push on iOS, in-app purchases and the credibility of a store listing are the reasons most products end up in the stores anyway. See our PWA vs. store app comparison.
