Example: from ChatGPT & Codex project to approved app

Say you built a recipe scaler and grocery list app with ChatGPT and Codex: it scales any recipe to the number of guests, and a "What can I cook?" chat suggests dishes from what is in the fridge via the OpenAI API. Codex moved the API call into a serverless function, added a /privacy page and a report button on chat answers, and you deployed the repository to Netlify on your own domain. WebViewGold wraps it, with the share sheet for sending the grocery list to a partner and haptic feedback when items are checked off. A short demo flow in the review notes shows the reviewer how to try the chat without an account. Both stores approve it, and each merged pull request updates the app.

Your first week after launch

  • Let Codex pick up bug reports as tasks and review its pull requests; merged and deployed fixes reach the apps immediately.
  • Track OpenAI usage daily in launch week and add per-user limits if a few users drive most of the cost.
  • Read reported chat answers and tighten the system prompt or the filters.
  • Record the WebViewGold bridge calls in AGENTS.md, so future Codex tasks keep them intact.
  • Ask for a rating with rateapp:// after a user checks off a complete grocery list.

Store-readiness prompt

Paste into ChatGPT & Codex, review the changes, publish.

Prompt for ChatGPT or Codex
Audit and prepare this web app for publishing as a native iOS and Android app (it will run inside a native WebView wrapper): move any OpenAI API calls to the server; ensure a meta viewport tag, no horizontal overflow from 320px up, 44px tap targets and safe-area-inset padding on fixed bars; add /privacy and /terms pages linked from the footer; add a "Delete account" action with confirmation; remove "Download our app" banners and external promotional links; add retry states for failed requests; set the <title> to the app name (max 30 characters). List every change.

Frequently asked questions

How do I publish a ChatGPT-built app in the App Store?

Deploy the code to a public HTTPS URL, insert it into WebViewGold for iOS, build with Xcode or the Cloud Builder and submit via App Store Connect. The same URL powers the Android app.

Does Apple accept apps that use the OpenAI API?

Yes, with content moderation, a privacy policy that describes the processing and keys kept on the server. Many WebViewGold apps use AI backends.

Do I need the OpenAI Apps SDK to put my ChatGPT-built app in the App Store?

No. The Apps SDK is for apps that run inside ChatGPT itself. A store app is your own web app on your own URL, wrapped with WebViewGold; it can call the OpenAI API from your server, but it does not need ChatGPT to run.

My ChatGPT Canvas app is a single HTML file. Is that enough for the stores?

Usually not on its own. Host it on a permanent HTTPS URL first, then add what an app needs: several real screens, a privacy page, an offline state and at least one native feature such as push notifications or the share sheet. Codex can turn the file into a small project with those pieces.

Three ways to get your app into the stores

Same result, different amount of work on your side. All three come with the approval guarantee and 24/7 human support.
