App Store rejection

Guideline 5.2.1 (Intellectual Property): brand names, logos, fonts and images in vibe-coded apps

AI tools are generous with other people's brands: "ChatGPT Helper" as a name, a Midjourney icon that looks like a famous logo, screenshots with Instagram UI. Apple checks all of it. Here is what you can use, what you cannot, and how to rename without starting over.

From $109 one-time per platform, or let our team do it all from $698.

What 5.2.1 says

Apps must not use protected third-party material such as trademarks, copyrighted works or patented ideas without permission, and developers must be able to show documentation of their rights when asked. Related rules forbid app names and icons that imitate other apps or Apple's own products and services. Reviewers look at the name, subtitle, icon, screenshots, description and the content on the first screens; a hit in any of them is a 5.2.1 message, sometimes combined with 2.3.7 for the name.

This matters for vibe coders because AI builders suggest names from the tools they know, image generators reproduce logos they were trained on, and template text copied from a competitor lands in the description unnoticed. None of it is malicious, all of it gets flagged.

Allowed or not?

SituationVerdictNote
"ChatGPT", "Lovable", "Notion" or "Instagram" in your app name or subtitleNot allowedThird-party trademark in the name; expect 5.2.1 plus 2.3.7.
"Powered by OpenAI models" in the descriptionGenerally allowedFollow the provider's brand guidelines; descriptive use, no logo, no implied endorsement.
"Works with Shopify stores" (descriptive, with a non-affiliation note)Usually allowedApple may ask for proof of a partnership; keep the sentence factual.
Icon that resembles a known logo, Apple's Apple, or an App Store badgeNot allowedGenerated icons often copy shapes; brief the generator for an abstract mark.
Google Fonts under the Open Font LicenseAllowedKeep the license file; most other fonts need an app-embedding license.
Stock photos from Unsplash, Pexels or a paid libraryAllowedKeep the license and avoid recognizable people, logos and artworks in the photo.
Screenshots showing WhatsApp, Instagram or other apps' UINot allowedShow your app only; see the metadata guide.

Rename and resubmit without losing work

  1. Pick a brand-safe name

Check App Store search, your country's trademark register and the domain. Short, unique, no third-party marks; the prompt below helps.

  2. Change the name in App Store Connect

Before the first release the name is editable in the app information; afterwards a name change ships with the next version. The bundle ID stays, so nothing else is lost.

  3. Change it in the WebViewGold project

Product Name and Bundle Display Name in Xcode (accented letters only in the display name, as the app name docs explain). The internal project name stays "WebViewGold". In the Cloud Builder, update the app name field.

  4. Replace the icon and splash

Regenerate with a neutral brief, replace the icon set and splash.gif, and update the icon in App Store Connect so binary and listing match.

  5. Update the web app

Page title, PWA manifest, email templates and the footer. Remove the "built with" badge if you have not already; see removing the Lovable badge.

  6. Reply with what changed, attach what you own

In Resolution Center, list the renamed elements and attach licenses or permissions for anything you kept. If the reviewer misread your own brand as someone else's, attach the registration.

My iOS WebView is finally approved. Thanks!!

Prompt: brand-safe name and icon brief

Prompt for ChatGPT, Claude or Gemini
Suggest 10 app names for [what the app does, for whom]. Rules: no existing company, product, AI model or tool names (no GPT, ChatGPT, Lovable, Bolt, Notion, Instagram, Apple), no generic category words stuffed together, max 14 characters, easy to say, no spelling tricks, .com or .app domain plausible. For the top 3, give a 30-character App Store subtitle and an icon brief for an image generator: abstract symbol, two colors, no text, no resemblance to known logos, no Apple or iOS imagery. Add a one-line note on why each name is unlikely to collide with a trademark.

IP traps that hide in AI-built apps

  • Icon packs or illustrations with non-commercial or attribution licenses bundled by the generated code.
  • Marketing copy "inspired by" a competitor's site, sometimes copied verbatim by the AI.
  • Characters, celebrities or artworks in generated images (a mascot that looks like a Nintendo character).
  • "iPhone", "iOS" or "App Store" in the app name or icon; Apple restricts its own marks too.

Frequently asked questions

Can I say "AI" or "GPT" in my app name?

"AI" is a generic term and fine. "GPT" and "ChatGPT" are OpenAI marks; avoid them in the name and follow the provider's brand rules for mentions in the description.

I bought a logo on a marketplace. Is that enough?

Usually yes, if the license covers app use and the designer had the rights. Keep the receipt and the license text; marketplace logos that copy famous shapes are still a problem.

Does renaming reset my review or my TestFlight testers?

No. The app record, bundle ID, testers and review thread stay. Upload the renamed build as a new version or build and reply in the same Resolution Center thread.
