Google Play rejection

Impersonation and intellectual property: brand names, logos and "ChatGPT" in your app title

These two policies catch more vibe-coded apps than any other content rule, because AI tools happily generate names like "ChatGPT Helper" and icons that look like a famous brand. Google acts on them at review time and again after launch when a rights holder complains. Here is how to stay clear, and how to fix an app that was flagged.

From $109 one-time per platform, or let our team do it all from $698.

Two policies, one pattern

Impersonation covers anything that makes users believe your app comes from, or is endorsed by, someone else: another developer, a company, a brand, a government agency. Names, icons, developer names, screenshots and descriptions all count, and "unofficial" in small print does not undo a title that reads like the original. Intellectual property covers using protected material without permission: trademarks in names and icons, copyrighted images, music, video and text, and apps that repackage someone else's app or content.

The pattern reviewers look for is borrowed recognition. If the first thing a user sees is somebody else's brand, the app is flagged, whatever the second thing is. Unlike most rejections, this one can also arrive months after launch as a removal with a strike when the brand owner files a complaint, so it is worth fixing even when the first review let it through.

Where vibe-coded apps get caught

AI model names in the title

"ChatGPT Chat", "GPT Assistant", "Gemini Notes", "Claude Companion". The model is a trademark of its provider. Name the app after what it does for the user and mention the technology in the description, following the provider's brand guidelines.

Generated icons that mimic a brand

Image generators reproduce familiar shapes: a speech bubble with a particular swirl, a camera icon with a known gradient, a bird. Ask for a new concept in your own colors and compare it with the apps in your category before you ship.

Fan and community apps

A fan app for a club, a band or a game that uses their logo and name as if official. Possible only with a license; otherwise use your own brand and state clearly that it is an independent fan project.

Copied content

Stock photos without a license, song snippets, scraped articles, a WordPress theme's demo images. Reviewers do not check every photo, but rights holders do, and a complaint leads to a removal.

Rename and rebrand properly

Do all of it in one update so the listing, the app and the binary agree.

  1. Pick a distinctive name

Search Google Play, the web and a trademark database for your candidate. A name that is free in all three and describes your value ("Pocket Study Planner") is safer than a clever brand reference.

  2. Rewrite the listing

Remove third-party names from the title and short description. In the full description, say what the app is built on in neutral wording, for example "uses the OpenAI API", if the provider's guidelines allow it, and never claim partnership or endorsement.

  3. Change the name in WebViewGold

The app name is in strings.xml of the Android Studio project (or the app name field in the Cloud Builder). The icon goes into the mipmap folders as described in the app icon documentation. Replace the splash graphic too if it carried the old logo.

  4. Check the package name

The package name is permanent. If it contains the brand (com.chatgptclone.app), the app keeps carrying it in URLs and in Play Console. For a new app, pick a neutral one now; for a live app, decide whether a fresh listing is worth it. The package name guide explains the trade-offs.

  5. Clean the screenshots and the web app

Remove other companies' logos from screenshots and from the web app's UI, including "Powered by" badges you did not get permission for. Replace unlicensed photos with your own or properly licensed ones.

  6. Respond to the notice

For a rejection, resubmit the renamed app. For a removal after a complaint, fix the issue and reply through Policy status; if you hold a license or the rights, attach the proof there. The appeal guide has a template.

Prompt: brand-safe name and listing

The prompt forces alternatives that do not lean on other brands.

Paste into ChatGPT, Claude or your builder
Suggest 10 app names for my app that do not contain or resemble any existing brand, product, company or AI model name, and that are unlikely to conflict with trademarks.
What the app does: [description]
Audience: [audience]
Tone: [friendly / professional / playful]
For each name, give a one-line reason, a short description (max 80 characters) that does not mention any other company or model, and a plain-language icon concept that uses only my own colors: [colors].
Then list the words I must avoid in the title and short description because they are trademarks of other companies, based on my current draft: [paste current title and short description].

Frequently asked questions

Can I say "powered by ChatGPT" in the description?

Only if the provider's brand guidelines allow that wording, and never in the app name or icon. Many providers prefer a phrase such as "built with the OpenAI API". Check the current guidelines of the provider you use.

My app was live for months and was removed after a complaint. Is it a strike?

A removal following an IP complaint can count against your account. Fix the issue (rename, remove the content), then respond through Policy status. If you believe the claim is wrong, the appeal is where you provide the counter-evidence.

Is an "unofficial" label enough for a fan app?

No. The overall impression counts. Use your own name and icon, keep the club or game name in a descriptive sentence, and avoid their logo, colors and official imagery.
