Google Play rejection

Content rating mismatch: answering the IARC questionnaire truthfully for a web-wrapped or AI app

The content rating questionnaire takes five minutes and decides the age rating on your listing. Google compares your answers with what the reviewer sees in the app, and a mismatch (a chat you did not declare, an AI feature that produces anything, ads you added later) is a rejection or, for a live app, a removal until you fix it.

How the questionnaire works

Play Console uses the IARC system: you answer a questionnaire about your app's content and features, and it produces ratings for several regions at once (ESRB, PEGI, USK and others). The questions are about violence, sexual content, language, controlled substances, gambling themes, and about features: whether users interact or exchange content, whether they can share their location, whether the app contains digital purchases or ads, and whether it shows unrestricted web content.

Two things make this harder for web-wrapped apps. First, the reviewer rates the live website inside the WebView, so every feature of your site counts, not only what the native shell does. Second, your web app changes without a store update, so the rating can drift out of date while the listing stays the same. Google also updates the questionnaire from time to time and asks developers to complete the new version by a deadline; ignoring that email leads to the same mismatch state.

Questions vibe coders answer wrong

User interaction

Comments, direct messages, group chat, a community feed, even a support chat between users counts as users interacting. If people can communicate, say so.

Sharing content and location

Profiles with photos, posts others can see, a map that shows other users nearby. Each is a separate question, and "only after login" does not make it a no.

AI-generated content

An AI chat, image generator or writing tool can produce text and images you did not author. Treat its output like user-generated content when answering, and configure the model's safety settings so what it produces matches the rating you want.

Ads and purchases

Enabling AdMob in WebViewGold or adding RevenueCat purchases after the first release changes the answers. Retake the questionnaire with every feature change of that kind.

Gambling-like mechanics

Loot boxes, spin-the-wheel rewards, simulated casino games in a "fun" app. Simulated gambling has its own question and raises the rating even without real money.

Unrestricted web content

If your app lets users open arbitrary websites (a browser-like feature, a link preview that loads any URL), declare it. A wrapper that loads only your own domain does not need to.

Retake the questionnaire correctly

In Play Console: App content, then Content rating.

  1. Pick the right category

Utility, social, communication, entertainment and so on. The category decides which detailed questions follow; a social app gets more questions about interaction than a productivity app.

  2. Walk through your web app, not your memory

Open the app and list every feature that lets users talk, post, upload, share location, buy or see ads. Include admin-only or hidden features if a user can reach them.

  3. Answer each content question for the worst case

For AI features, the worst case is what the model can produce after a determined user tries. If you cannot keep it tame with system prompts and filters, answer accordingly and accept a higher rating.

  4. Submit and read the result

The resulting ratings are shown immediately. If a rating looks surprising, revisit the answer that caused it rather than resubmitting with a different answer; the reviewer will test the feature.

  5. Align the other declarations

Target audience, Data safety and the Ads declaration must tell the same story as the rating. A rating that admits user interaction and a target audience that includes children, for example, triggers the Families rules.

  6. Resubmit the app

A changed questionnaire is reviewed with the next submission. Create a new release even if only the rating changed, so the review sees both together.

With a good optimized version of your web app you can have a stunning mobile app within a couple of minutes. Additionally to that the customer service is very nice and very helpful! I can just recommend WebViewGold :-)

Consistency check before you submit

  • Content rating answers match the features that exist in the web app today.
  • Ads declaration agrees with SHOW_BANNER_AD / SHOW_FULL_SCREEN_AD in Config.java.
  • Target audience does not include children unless you meet the Families policy.
  • Data safety declares what the rated features collect (messages, photos, location).
  • The questionnaire is retaken whenever you add chat, uploads, ads, purchases or AI generation.

Frequently asked questions

Does an unrated app get published?

No. Without a completed questionnaire the app cannot be submitted, and an existing app whose rating expired after a questionnaire update can be removed from the store until you complete it.

My app is for adults only. Can I just select the highest rating?

Ratings come from your answers; you cannot choose them directly. Answer the questions truthfully and the resulting rating will be appropriate. Over-declaring content you do not have is also a mismatch.

I added AdMob after launch. Do I need to redo the rating?

Yes. Retake the questionnaire, update the Ads declaration and submit the new version together.
