Google Play developer account verification: identity, D-U-N-S and DNS website verification

Your app can be perfect and still not go live, because the account that publishes it is not verified. Google verifies who you are, how to contact you, which organization you represent and, if you add one, that the website is yours. Each step has a deadline and a way to fail. Here is how to pass all of them on the first try.

From $109 one-time per platform, or let our team do it all from $698.

What Google verifies and when

New developer accounts go through verification before they can publish, and existing accounts get asked to complete it by a deadline shown in Play Console. The checks are: identity (a government ID for the account owner or an authorized person of the organization), contact details (an email you confirm and a phone number you can receive a code on), organization details (a D-U-N-S number plus official documents for company accounts), a payments profile whose legal name and address match the rest, and optionally a website you prove you control. Google shows your developer name and email on every listing, and organization accounts also show their address.

Missing a deadline limits the account: you cannot publish or update until the steps are complete, and if the limit is ignored for long enough, apps can be removed and the account closed. The countdown is visible on the Play Console home page. Treat it like the 12-tester requirement: start on day one, because none of it can be rushed.

Personal vs. organization account

PersonalOrganization
Who it is forIndividuals, side projects, sole traders in some countriesCompanies, non-profits, agencies publishing for clients

Pass verification without a reset

Mismatches are the number one reason for a failed check. Make every name and address identical.

  1. Decide the account type first

A personal account cannot be converted; you would create a new organization account and transfer apps later. If a company will own the app, register the organization now. The Play Console setup guide covers the trade-offs.

  2. Make the legal name and address identical everywhere

Payments profile, Play Console developer details, the ID document and, for companies, the D-U-N-S record. No abbreviations in one place and full names in another; no PO boxes.

  3. Get the D-U-N-S number (organizations)

Request it from Dun and Bradstreet with the exact registered company name and address. If one already exists for your company, look it up instead of creating a duplicate. Enter it in Play Console once it is active.

  4. Verify email and phone

Use an address you read daily, ideally on your own domain. Google sends policy notices, verification requests and deadline reminders there.

  5. Verify your website

In the developer profile, add your website and verify it through Google Search Console. The DNS method adds a TXT record at your DNS provider (Cloudflare, Namecheap, GoDaddy); the file method uploads a verification file to your site. Preview domains from Lovable, Bolt or Replit cannot be verified because you do not control their DNS, which is one more reason to use a custom domain.

  6. Answer document requests fast

If Google asks for additional documents, upload clear scans within the stated window. Blurry photos and expired IDs are the usual reasons for a second request.

  7. Keep records

Note which email, phone and documents were used. If the account changes hands or you add team members later, you will need them.

DNS TXT record for website verification

Add it at the DNS provider of your custom domain (the host is the root of the domain), wait for propagation, then press Verify in Search Console. The value comes from Search Console; the one below is an example.

text
Type: TXT
Host: @ (or yourdomain.com, depending on the provider)
Value: google-site-verification=abc123exampleVALUEfromSearchConsole
TTL: Auto / 3600

Why verifications fail

  • Legal name on the ID differs from the payments profile (middle names, maiden names, transliterations).
  • Company name in Play Console differs from the D-U-N-S record by a suffix (Ltd, GmbH, Inc).
  • Address with a PO box or a virtual office that the documents do not show.
  • Expired ID, cropped scan, or a photo with glare over the number.
  • Developer name that looks like an established brand or like Google itself.
  • Website added with a preview domain you cannot verify.
  • Deadline email in a mailbox nobody checks.

Frequently asked questions

Does verification cost anything beyond the $25 registration fee?

No. Identity verification, D-U-N-S numbers and website verification are free. Beware of services that charge for a D-U-N-S number; the standard request from Dun and Bradstreet is free and only slower than the paid express option.

What happens if I miss the verification deadline?

The account is limited: no new publishing or updates until you complete verification. Complete it and the limits are lifted; prolonged non-verification can lead to removal of apps and closure of the account.

Do I need to verify my website to publish?

No, it is optional for publishing. It is strongly recommended for web-wrapped apps because it documents that you own the site the app loads.
